Why is it bad news if your massage products contain mineral oil?

Mineral oil, often used in various skincare and massage products, is a petroleum-derived substance. While it can provide a smooth texture and act as an emollient, there are several reasons why it is generally considered undesirable in massage therapy products.
Poor Skin Absorption
Mineral oil creates a barrier on the skin rather than being absorbed. This can block pores, preventing the skin from breathing and potentially leading to clogged pores or acne. Unlike plant-based oils that nourish and penetrate the skin, mineral oil sits on the surface, offering no real long-term benefits to skin health.
Lack of Nutrients
Unlike natural oils such as sunflower oil and grape seed oil, mineral oil lacks essential vitamins, fatty acids, and antioxidants that nourish the skin. It may provide a temporary smooth feel but doesn’t contribute to the skin’s health or hydration over time.
Possible Contamination Concerns
Mineral oil is derived from petroleum, raising concerns about contamination with harmful chemicals, such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). While cosmetic-grade mineral oil is heavily refined and regulated, some consumers prefer to avoid the potential risks associated with petroleum-based products.
Occlusive Nature
While its occlusive property can lock in moisture, it can also trap sweat, bacteria, and dead skin cells, leading to irritation or inflammation, especially in people with sensitive skin or conditions like eczema or dermatitis. This can be counterproductive in massage therapy, which aims to enhance skin health and relaxation.
Environmental Impact
Being a non-renewable resource, mineral oil is not environmentally friendly. Its production contributes to pollution, and since it doesn’t break down easily, its use in products can have long-lasting effects on the environment.
Limited Therapeutic Benefits
Mineral oil lacks the therapeutic qualities of plant-based oils. Natural oils have additional benefits like anti-inflammatory, healing, or soothing properties. Mineral oil, by contrast, does not offer these additional benefits, making it less ideal for massage therapy.
For all these reasons, many therapists, and consumers prefer plant-based oils that provide both therapeutic and skin-nourishing benefits without these downsides.
